The stories are populated by people leading what looks on the surface like humdrum lives. Johanna Parry buys a passenger ticket from the station agent and inquires about having hatesihp shipped.


All over a matter that could never be resolved. But the narration is powerful, and the author seems always to know exactly what effect she will produce.

Her teenage charge Sabitha, trembling with sexual awakening and uncomfortable spite, fabricates a letter from her widowed father revealing chaste love for Johanna, and pockets the latter’s cautious replies. Munro has a lot of knowledge about the various types of relationships between men and women, how they can be built, twisted, broken and remade.

At the heart of the book are five stories set in an old-fashioned, connoisseurial antiques shop, in which Warner moves effortlessly between Wodehousian comedy and unbearably poignant reminiscence.
